WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association released its final schedule for its upcoming Spring Clinic, scheduled for Sunday, April 28, and Monday, April 29 at JustaGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. Sunday’s slate will start around 4:30 pm, while Monday’s daytime schedule will finish up mid-afternoon.

Marquette University’s Ryan Theis, UW-Green Bay’s Abbey Sutherland, and Cardinal Stritch University’s Dan Mathews headline the clinic’s college coaching roster. Additionally, Kathy Bresnahan will present her inspirational experience as the true head coach of the recent film “The Miracle Season,” and the duo of Vanessa Summers and Andor Gyulai of Volleyball 1on1 will offer new strategies to revamp your coaching approach.

The WVCA will also host multiple networking and idea-sharing opportunities for clinic attendees, including a social gathering Sunday evening and a town hall open forum Monday morning. Vendors, as well as special guests from the WIAA, AVCA, and Badger Region will also be on hand.

“We sent out an informal poll about what members want to hear and see for this year’s clinic, and hope to deliver some of those requests to our attendees,” WVCA Executive Director Jay Messar said. “There are a lot of different topics on this year’s slate and we think there will be something for coaches at all program levels.”

This year’s clinic will once again coincide with the annual WVCA Hall of Fame & Coaches’ Awards Banquet—this year slated for noon on Sunday, April 28 at The Crystal Room in Wisconsin Dells. Registration for both events can be found on the Resources & Forms page of the WVCA website, www.wisvca.org.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Ryan Theis – Marquette University (NCAA-DI)

Theis’ Golden Eagles set several historical marks this past season with a 28-7 overall mark, earning their eighth straight NCAA Tournament berth. After finishing runner-up in both the regular season and Big East Tournament, Marquette’s at-large bid earned them their first-ever national seed at #14 overall. The Golden Eagles also reached their first Sweet 16 in school history last year, before falling to eventual national semifinalist Illinois.

Abbey Sutherland – University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (NCAA-DI)

In her first year at the helm, Sutherland took her Green Bay squad straight to the top of the Horizon League laurels last fall, winning both the regular season and conference tournament to earn its first NCAA postseason birth since 2003. After building the UW-Stevens Point program into a regional Division III power prior to UWGB, Sutherland’s Phoenix fell to a very potent Wisconsin team in the opening round.

Dan Mathews – Cardinal Stritch University (NAIA)

Mathews is in his third year at the helm of the CSU men’s & women’s volleyball programs on Milwaukee’s north side. His women’s teams have earned two straight berths in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, while his men’s teams have been to the CCAC Tournament the past three seasons and earned a berth in the NAIA National Championship Tournament last spring. Mathews was also named the AVCA’s NAIA National Men’s Coach of the Year honors following the 2018 season.

Kathy Bresnahan – Iowa City West High School (Iowa)

Bresnahan is the former the head coach of Iowa City West High School and the inspiration for the movie “The Miracle Season.” Her novel of the same name is a true account from her coaching tenure, guiding West’s Women of Troy through tragedy. Through the loss of a treasured teammate, she now promotes a message of perseverance and appreciation for the sport of volleyball and life itself.

Vanessa Summers & Andor Gyulai – Volleyball 1on1

Summers & Gyulai team up to provide incredible new ways to approach coaching techniques—from rethinking your leadership style and motivational tactics to ensuring you are running an effective and efficient practice.  Summers, a former top-ranked teen tennis athlete, is also a former Investment Advisor who is privy to integrating winning strategies.  Gyulai is an expert volleyball coach with over 25 years of experience, and won a national title as a UCLA Bruin in 1995.
