Ocon takes over as D1 No. 1

Division 1

In an incredible gauntlet of some of the state’s top talent this past weekend, defending state runner-up Oconomowoc took home the championship at the Eastbay Charger Challenge. The Raccoons upped their season record to 21-1 overall and take over at the No. 1 spot in the Week 4 Coaches Poll. River Falls, which lost to Oconomowoc in the Charger Challenge final, impressed enough to leap four spots in the poll to No. 3—right behind No. 2 Arrowhead. Brookfield Central’s loss to the Warhawks in a surprising Silver Bracket quarterfinal dropped the Lancers to fourth, while Burlington held onto a top five spot again this week.

Division 2

At the halfway point of the regular season, one thing is clear—Sectional 3 is loaded. In this Week 4 poll, eight of the top 10 teams in Division 2 hail from that sectional, including top-ranked Lakeside Lutheran. The Warriors edged subsectional foe Lake Country Lutheran for the second straight week, as the Lightning took home a perfect 9-0 record and Pewaukee tournament championship over the weekend. Platteville is off to one of its best starts in school history at 27-3, and bumped Edgewood down to No. 5 this week. Wisconsin Lutheran—No. 4 this week and the only team among the top five not in Sectional 3—accrued some major upsets at the Charger Challenge before finishing runner-up to Arrowhead in the Silver Bracket.

Division 3

Howards Grove may have dropped the head-to-head battle to Waterloo in Friday’s Charger Challenge pool play, but the Tigers knocked off host Hamilton and Kettle Moraine (for the second time this season) before falling to newly crowned D1 No. 1 Oconomowoc to finish third overall. Waterloo, this week’s No. 2, went 4-2 at the Challenge, falling to Wisconsin Lutheran in the Silver Bracket semifinals. Aquinas resumed the No. 3 position after a third place finish at the Diocesan Invite, while Stratford’s unbeaten week improved the Tigers to 21-3 at No. 4. Last week’s No. 3, Grantsburg, dropped a heated showdown at West Lakeland rival Saint Croix Falls to drop to No. 5 this week.

Division 4

Catholic Central just keeps battling through its ruthless regular season slate and maintained its reign atop Division 4 for the fourth straight week. The lone remaining unbeaten, Clear Lake, has quietly surged up the D4 rankings and finds itself at No. 2 this week with a perfect 18-0 season record. Sectional rival McDonell Central’s lone loss at the Diocesan Invite was to D3 power Aquinas as the Macks held on to the No. 3 spot this week. Marawood Conference contender Prentice upped its season mark to 20-4 overall and rose one spot to No. 4 in Week 4. Columbus Catholic, which fell to McDonell and Regis at the Diocesan Invite, clung to its top five ranking at No. 5 this week.
