No changes atop penultimate 2023 coaches poll

Despite some major tournaments pitting the state's top teams against one another, there was once again little movement in the WVCA Week 7 Coaches poll--the second-to-last of the season.

Both Divine Savior Holy Angels and Oconomowoc pitched perfect 6-0 and 7-0 weeks, respectively. Appleton North, Manitowoc Lincoln, and Hamilton followed suit as they have most of the season in spots 3 through 5. The only real change in Division 1 happened at No. 10, as Eau Claire Memorial earned a state ranking for the first time in at least a decade. The Old Abes will have a chance to claim an outright Big Rivers title Thursday in a battle with vote-getting Chippewa Falls.

Xavier and Pewaukee remained No. 1 and No. 2 this week, but Division 2 offers perhaps the best fireworks over these last two weeks--kicking off last weekend in Badger Conference action. No. 5 Edgewood fended off No. 6 McFarland in dual action, yet the Spartans swept No. 7 Sauk Prairie (who knocked off Edgewood earlier in the day) in Saturday's tournament finale. When the smoke cleared, there was no change happened in the rankings. No. 3 Fox Valley Lutheran and No. 4 Luxemburg-Casco will square off with the North Eastern Conference title on the line Tuesday, while the top-ranked Hawks will battle No. 9 Shawano for the Bay Conference title.

Division 3 got a potential Sectional Final preview as No. 3 McDonell surprised top-ranked St. Croix Falls at the Altoona Invitational Saturday. The Macks, who have posted the first 40-win season in the state so far, along with the Saints headline a loaded northwest sectional harboring four teams in this week's top ten. No. 5 Barron and poll newcomer No. 9 Webster join another pair receiving votes. Howards Grove held on at No. 2 this week, while unbeaten and No. 4 Laconia moved to 30-0 overall.

Columbus Catholic remained No. 1 in Division 4 in Week 7. Yet perhaps the biggest game of the week will feature No. 2 Royall's huge matchup at Scenic Bluffs rival and No. 7 Wonewoc-Center Tuesday. Wabeno/Laona was the week's biggest mover, rising to No. 5 after a 4-0 week. Additionally, Pacelli moved into the top 10 at No. 9, highlighting a strong pool of D4 contenders in central Wisconsin this fall.
