Neenah, East Troy, Stratford, Clayton claim top spots

Familiar faces headline the WVCA Week 1 Coaches Poll, shaped by results from several major early-season tournaments this past weekend.

Following its Milwaukee-area Joust Tournament victory, Neenah enters the Division 1 poll in the top spot, while runner-up Arrowhead files in right behind the Rockets in No. 2 position. In fact, Joust participants occupy all five top spots in this opening week, as Oconomowoc (third at the Joust), Divine Savior Holy Angels (fifth), and defending D1 State Champion Burlington (sixth) comprised the top teams after week one.

East Troy, which tied D1 Oconomowoc for third place at the Joust, takes top billing in Division 2 in the Week 1 poll. Perennial power Catholic Memorial is back on the radar at No. 2, after winning its own Crusader Invite (and Joust Play-In tournament). Kettle Moraine Lutheran enters at No. 3 after a strong showing at the Joust, while Little Chute and 2017 D2 runner-up Luxemburg-Casco rounded out the top five.

Stratford has raced out to a 15-0 mark this season and picked up the ensuing top spot in the Division 3 Coaches Poll. Despite being the smallest school at the Joust, Lake Country Lutheran established itself as a reloaded squad at No. 2. Aquinas’ 6-1 mark at the Friendship Invite claims the No. 3 spot, while Waterloo enters Week 1 at No. 4. Colfax, which narrowly missed the podium at the 40-team Menomonie Sprawl, rounds out the top five.

Defending State Champion Clayton was a unanimous No. 1 in Division 4, finishing runner-up to a potent River Falls squad at the Menomonie Sprawl this past weekend. Familiar foe Newman Catholic enters this week at No. 2, while River Ridge, Randolph and McDonell Central rounded out the top five.
