River Falls, Little Chute, Stratford, Clayton claim top spots

There was plenty of movement at the top of this week’s polls as teams continue to joust for WIAA Tournament seeding slots.

In Division 1, River Falls overthrew Arrowhead to assume the top spot for the first time this season, rising from the No. 3 spot last week. The Warhawks, who dropped a pair of thrilling Classic Eight battles this week, fell to No. 2. Watertown has continued to creep up the rankings, picking up seven victories over the week and jumping into the No. 3 spot—its highest position of the season. Divine Savior Holy Angels dropped to No. 4, while Oconomowoc’s big win over Catholic Memorial bumped them past Burlington for the No. 5 spot in Week 7.

In the Division 2 field, Little Chute experienced a pair of firsts this past week, including suffering its first loss at the hands of D1 Kimberly. However, the quality loss didn’t dissuade voters as the Mustangs also claimed their first reign atop the Division 2 field in Week 7. Previous No. 1 Catholic Memorial had a wild week that saw victories over D1 top ten teams Arrowhead and Cedarburg, but also losses to No. 5 Oconomowoc, Union Grove and Westosha Central. The 3-3 week dropped the Crusaders to No. 2. East Troy continued its steady pace at No. 3, followed by the potent Wisconsin Lutheran offense and an always battle-tested Kettle Moraine Lutheran at No. 4 and No.5, respectively.

With Little Chute’s loss on Saturday, Stratford remains the last officially unbeaten team in the state of Wisconsin and takes top billing in Division 3 for the seventh straight week. Aquinas’ Mississippi Valley Conference loss to a dark-horse Holmen squad didn’t hurt, as the Blugolds remained at No. 2 this week. Living Word Lutheran picked up a signature sweep over Midwest Classic foe Lake Country Lutheran this week, sending the Timberwolves into the No. 3 spot and dropping the Lightning right behind them at No. 4. Waterloo resumed its stature in the top five rounding out at No. 5 in Week 7.

Clayton clinched yet another outright Central Lakeland championship this week, improving to 19-2 overall and assuming the top spot in Division 4 for the seventh straight week. The Bears remain a full arms’ length ahead of No. 2 Newman Catholic, as they have for much of the season. River Ridge, which possesses a tie that is an officially uncountable contest, held true at No. 3 for the third straight week. Catholic Central, which has by far played the toughest schedule in all of Division 4, raised one spot to No. 4 this week. The Rockets of Randolph rounded out the top five in Division 4 after clinching the Trailways West title this past week.
